How to Change the Spawn Rate on Your Rust Server
Learn how to adjust the spawn rate on your Rust server from the RiverHosting panel so you can control how quickly animals, NPCs, and resources appear in your world.
The spawn rate on your Rust server controls how quickly animals, NPCs, and resources such as ore nodes and barrels appear across the map. If your server feels too empty or too crowded, adjusting the spawn rate is an easy way to find the right balance for your players.
This guide walks you through changing the spawn rate on your Rust server using the RiverHosting panel.
Before you start
- Make sure your Rust server is set up and you can access it at panel.riverhosting.com.
- You will need owner or admin access to your server in the panel.
- It is a good idea to let your players know before making changes, as a server restart will be required for the new spawn rate to take effect.
Before changing server settings, consider creating a quick backup from the Backups tab. This gives you a safe restore point if anything does not go as expected.
1. Open the Server Config page
The Server Config page is the fastest way to adjust spawn-related settings on your Rust server without editing files by hand.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Click on your Rust server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
The Server Config page displays the most common settings for your Rust server in a straightforward editor, so you do not need to locate or edit any config files manually.
2. Adjust the spawn rate setting
Once you are on the Server Config page, look for the spawn-related option. This is typically labelled something like Spawn Rate or a related multiplier field that controls how aggressively the server populates the world with entities.
- Find the spawn rate or spawn multiplier field on the Server Config page.
- Enter your desired value. The default is usually
1, which represents the standard spawn rate.- A value higher than 1 (for example
1.5or2) increases how many entities spawn and how often. - A value lower than 1 (for example
0.5) reduces the spawn rate for a quieter or more challenging survival experience.
- A value higher than 1 (for example
- Once you have entered your preferred value, click Save to apply the change.
Changes to the spawn rate will not take effect until you restart your server. Players currently connected will be disconnected briefly during the restart.
3. Restart your server to apply the change
After saving your new spawn rate, you need to restart the server so the setting takes effect.
- In the left-hand menu, click Console to return to your server's main page.
- Click the Restart button at the top of the page.
- Wait for the server to fully start up again. You can watch the console output to see when it is ready.
Once the server restarts, your new spawn rate will be active. Join the server and explore the map to see the difference.
Troubleshooting
- The spawn rate does not seem to have changed. Make sure you clicked Save on the Server Config page before restarting. If you navigated away without saving, the value will have reverted.
- The server will not start after the change. An invalid value such as a negative number or a non-numeric character can cause startup problems. Go back to Server Config, correct the spawn rate value to a valid positive number, save, and try restarting again.
- Spawns still feel wrong after a restart. Keep in mind that Rust's world population takes some time to settle after a restart. Give the server a few minutes to fill up before judging the result. You can also try a slightly different multiplier value if the current one is not right.
- I cannot find the spawn rate field. If the field is not visible on the Server Config page, you may need to set it via the Console using an RCON command. Open the RCON page from the left-hand menu and enter the relevant spawn command there.
