How to Add and Manage Admins on Your Project Zomboid Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to add and manage admin players on your Project Zomboid server from the RiverHosting panel so you can keep your server running smoothly and under control.

Admins on a Project Zomboid server have extra powers that regular players do not. They can kick and ban players, spawn items, turn on god mode, and use other in-game tools to manage the server. This guide walks you through how to grant admin access, remove it, and run admin commands, all from the RiverHosting panel.

    Before you start

    • Your Project Zomboid server must be running before you can grant admin access.
    • The player you want to make an admin must have joined your server at least once so their account exists in the server database.
    • You will need access to your server page at panel.riverhosting.com.
    Start the server first

Admin commands sent through the Console only work when the server is online. Make sure the server status shows as running before following the steps below.

    1. How to grant admin access to a player

The quickest way to make a player an admin is to use the built-in Console on your server page. The console lets you send live commands directly to your running server.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Project Zomboid server.
    2. Click Console in the left-hand menu.
    3. In the command input at the bottom of the console, type the following command and press Enter:
    grantadmin "YourPlayerName"

Replace YourPlayerName with the exact in-game username of the player you want to promote. The name is case-sensitive, so make sure it matches exactly.

    Example command

    grantadmin "SurvivorJane"

If the command works, you will see a confirmation message in the console output. The player now has full admin permissions in-game.

    2. How to remove admin access from a player

You can remove admin access just as easily from the Console using a similar command.

    1. Go to Console in the left-hand menu.
    2. Type the following command and press Enter:
    removeadmin "YourPlayerName"

Replace YourPlayerName with the player's exact in-game username. After running the command, that player will lose their admin permissions the next time they take an action that requires admin access.

    Name must be exact

Project Zomboid admin commands are case-sensitive. If the player's username is SurvivorJane, typing survivorjane will not work. Check the spelling carefully.

    3. How to set a server admin password

Project Zomboid uses an admin password system. Any player who knows this password can claim admin access in-game by typing a command. Setting a strong admin password is important so that only trusted players can become admins.

You can view and change the admin password from the World Settings page in your server panel.

    1. Open your Project Zomboid server page in the RiverHosting panel.
    2. Click World Settings in the left-hand menu.
    3. Look for the admin password field and update it to something strong and private.
    4. Save your changes and restart the server for the new password to take effect.
    Keep your admin password private

Anyone who knows your admin password can grant themselves admin access in-game. Do not share it publicly or in chat. If you think it has been leaked, change it immediately from World Settings and restart your server.

Once the password is set, a player can claim admin status in-game by opening the chat and typing:

    /setaccesslevel "YourPlayerName" admin

They will be prompted to enter the admin password to confirm.

    4. How to use other useful admin commands

The Console in the RiverHosting panel supports all standard Project Zomboid server commands. Here are a few commonly used ones:

    • kickuser "PlayerName" removes a player from the server immediately.
    • banuser "PlayerName" permanently bans a player from the server.
    • unbanuser "PlayerName" removes a ban so the player can rejoin.
    • players lists all players currently connected to the server.
    • save forces the server to save the world immediately.
    Running commands from in-game

If you are in-game as an admin, you can also run these commands from the in-game chat by prefixing them with a forward slash, for example /kickuser "PlayerName". The panel Console and the in-game chat both accept the same commands.

    Troubleshooting

    • The command returns an error or no response: Make sure the server is fully started before sending commands. If the console shows the server is still loading, wait a moment and try again.
    • The player name is not recognised: The player must have joined the server at least once before the server knows their username. Ask them to connect and then try the command again.
    • Admin commands are not working in-game: The player may need to relog after being granted admin access for the permission change to fully apply.
    • You cannot find World Settings: Make sure you are on your Project Zomboid server page. This option is only available for Project Zomboid servers, not other game types.
    • The admin password change did not take effect: Restart the server after saving any changes in World Settings. Some settings only apply on the next startup.
