How to Configure Your Insurgency: Sandstorm Server Settings from the Panel

    4 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to configure your Insurgency: Sandstorm server settings from the RiverHosting panel so you can customise your server without editing any files by hand.

Insurgency: Sandstorm gives server owners a lot of control over how their server runs, from the game rules and player limits to admin access and map rotation. The RiverHosting panel puts the most important settings in one place so you can make changes quickly without touching any configuration files directly.

This guide walks you through the main areas you will use to configure your Insurgency: Sandstorm server from the panel.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Insurgency: Sandstorm server with RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
    • Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your Insurgency: Sandstorm server.
    • Stop your server before making configuration changes. Restart it once you are done to apply them.
    Stop before editing

Always stop your server before changing settings and restart it afterwards. Changes made while the server is running may not take effect or could be overwritten on shutdown.

    1. Configure your server settings

The Server Config page is the main place to adjust how your Insurgency: Sandstorm server behaves. You can find it in the left-hand menu when viewing your server in the panel.

Common settings you can change here include:

    • Server name and password
    • Maximum player count
    • Game mode settings
    • Friendly fire rules
    • Tick rate and performance-related options
    1. Open the RiverHosting panel and select your Insurgency: Sandstorm server.
    2. Click Server Config in the left-hand menu.
    3. Adjust any settings you want to change.
    4. Save your changes using the save button on the page.
    5. Restart your server for the changes to take effect.
    Server name tip

Give your server a clear, descriptive name so players can find it easily in the server browser. If you also want players to join using a custom address, check out the Subdomain Manager in the left-hand menu.

    2. Set up and manage admins

The Admins page lets you grant admin permissions to players on your server. Admins can kick players, change maps, and use other in-game moderation commands.

    1. Click Admins in the left-hand menu.
    2. Add the Steam IDs of any players you want to give admin access to.
    3. Save the changes.
    4. Restart the server so the updated admin list is loaded.
    Finding a Steam ID

You can find a player's Steam ID by visiting their Steam profile and looking at the URL, or by using a Steam ID lookup tool. The format you need is usually a 17-digit number.

    3. Manage your map rotation

The Map Rotation page lets you control which maps and scenarios play on your server and in what order. Insurgency: Sandstorm uses scenario names that combine a map name with a game mode, such as Scenario_Precinct_Checkpoint_Security.

    1. Click Map Rotation in the left-hand menu.
    2. Add the scenario names you want to include in your rotation.
    3. Arrange them in the order you prefer.
    4. Save your changes and restart the server.
    Example scenario names

Here are a few common scenario formats: Scenario_Farmhouse_Checkpoint_Security, Scenario_Ministry_Push_Security, Scenario_Crossing_Skirmish. Refer to the official Insurgency: Sandstorm wiki for a full list of valid scenario names.

    4. Install and manage mods

The Mods and Maps page lets you add Workshop mods and custom maps to your server. Mods can change gameplay, add new content, or introduce community-made maps.

    1. Click Mods and Maps in the left-hand menu.
    2. Enter the Workshop IDs for the mods you want to add. You can find Workshop IDs on the mod's Steam Workshop page in the URL.
    3. Save your changes.
    4. Restart the server. The mods will be downloaded and loaded automatically on startup.
    Client-side requirement

Players who join a modded server may need to have the same mods installed on their own game client. Check the mod's Workshop page to see whether it requires a client-side download.

    5. Use the RCON console for live commands

The RCON page gives you an in-panel admin console you can use to run commands on your server while it is running. This is useful for changing maps on the fly, kicking players, or checking the server status without restarting.

    1. Make sure your server is running.
    2. Click RCON in the left-hand menu.
    3. Type your command into the input field and press Enter or click the send button.
    Common RCON commands

Useful Insurgency: Sandstorm RCON commands include Travel ScenarioName to change the map, AdminKickPlayer PlayerName to kick a player, and Quit to shut the server down cleanly.

    Troubleshooting

    • Changes are not taking effect. Make sure you saved your changes on the settings page and fully restarted the server afterwards. A simple stop and start from the panel is usually enough.
    • Admins cannot use commands in-game. Double-check that the Steam ID in the Admins page is correct and that the server was restarted after you saved the list.
    • Mods are not loading. Confirm the Workshop IDs are entered correctly with no extra spaces. Also check whether the mod requires a specific load order or additional setup described on its Workshop page.
    • The map rotation is not cycling correctly. Verify that your scenario names use the exact format expected by the game, including correct capitalisation. An invalid scenario name will cause the rotation to skip or fail.
    • Players cannot connect. Check the Network page in the left-hand menu to confirm the server address and port. You can also set up a custom subdomain using the Subdomain Manager for a friendlier join address.
