Which Settings Can You Change on Your Hytale Server?
Hytale has no MOTD or server name setting in the panel. See which options you can change on the Startup tab of your Hytale server and how to apply them.
The message of the day, often called the MOTD, is a short welcome text some games show to players when they connect. Many customers ask whether they can set one on their Hytale server. This guide explains what the RiverHosting panel currently lets you change for Hytale, and how to apply those changes safely.
Before you start
- Make sure you have an active Hytale server on your RiverHosting panel.
- The panel has no MOTD field for Hytale. There is also no Properties page and no Hytale config editor.
- Hytale has very few settings. Almost everything you can change is an option on the Startup page.
RiverHosting cannot confirm a supported way to set a MOTD on Hytale from the panel. Because of this, this guide does not ask you to edit any file by hand.
1. What you can change for your Hytale server in the panel
Instead of a MOTD box, your Hytale server has a set of options on the Startup page. These are the ones you will see there:
- Auth Mode:
authenticated(default) checks players' Hytale accounts.offlineskips account checks, so anyone can join under any name. - Allow operators: off by default. It must be on before anyone, including you, can use operator commands.
- Patchline:
release(default) orpre-release. Your Hytale client must be on the same branch as the server. - Accept Early Plugins: off by default. Hytale warns that early plugins are unsupported.
- Disable Sentry: turns off crash reporting.
- Use Ahead-of-Time Cache: on by default, for faster boots.
- Install Source Query plugin and Source Query Port: used for server queries. If the port is empty, the game port plus 1 is used.
- JVM Flags: extra startup flags for advanced users.
You can also manage players from Players in the left-hand menu. Use it to kick, ban, whitelist or make a player an operator. It needs two query plugins, and the page offers an Install Required Plugins button if they are missing.
The Hytale Server Session Token option on the Startup page should stay empty. An empty value lets the server download Hytale itself.
2. How to change a Startup option and apply it
Startup changes take effect the next time your server starts.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and open your Hytale server.
- In the SERVER section of the left-hand menu, click Settings, then the Startup tab at the top of the page.

- Change the option you want, for example turn on Allow operators.
- Click Save Changes.

- Open Console in the left-hand menu and click Restart. On other pages you can also use the >_ Quick Console tab on the right edge of the screen, which has the same Restart button.

- Watch the console until the server finishes starting. The first start is slower than later ones.
The server header at the top of each page only shows the status and the address. The Start, Restart, Stop and Kill buttons are on the Console page and in the Quick Console.
If you change Patchline, it takes effect on the next install or update, not right away.
Troubleshooting
- I cannot find a MOTD, server name or max players field. The panel does not offer these for Hytale. Only the options listed on the Startup page can be changed.
- My Startup change did not apply. Make sure you clicked Save Changes, then restart the server from the Console page.
- Players cannot join after I changed Patchline. The Hytale client must be on the same patchline as the server. Switch the client or set the Patchline option back.
- Operator commands do not work. Turn on Allow operators on the Startup page, save, and restart the server.
- The server is stuck starting on first launch. Open the Console page and complete the Hytale sign-in dialog. The server waits until you sign in. If the code expired, restart the server to get a new one.
If you ever decide to edit server files yourself in the File Manager, create a backup first from the Backups page. Restoring a backup replaces all current files.
