How to Change the Max Player Slot Count on Your Garry's Mod Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your Garry's Mod server from the RiverHosting panel so you can open up more slots or keep your sessions tight and controlled.

By default, your Garry's Mod server is set up with a player slot limit that may not match what you need. Whether you want to run a small private session with a few friends or open up a larger community server, you can change the maximum player count from the RiverHosting panel in just a few steps.

This guide walks you through how to update the slot limit using the built-in Server Config page, so no manual file editing is needed.

    Before you start

    • You need an active Garry's Mod server on your RiverHosting account.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com before following these steps.
    • Your server plan must support the number of slots you want to set. If you are unsure how many slots your plan includes, check your plan details at billing.riverhosting.com.
    Slot limits and your plan

Setting a player slot count higher than what your plan supports may cause performance problems or connection issues. Stick to the slot count your plan is designed for.

    1. How to change the max player slot count using Server Config

The easiest way to change the player limit is through the Server Config page in your server's left-hand menu. This page gives you a clean interface for adjusting common server settings without editing any files manually.

    1. Go to panel.riverhosting.com and open your Garry's Mod server.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
    3. Look for the setting that controls the maximum number of players. It is usually labelled something like Max Players or Player Slots.
    4. Update the value to the number of players you want to allow on your server at one time.
    5. Save your changes using the save button on the page.
    6. Restart your server so the new slot count takes effect. You can do this from the Console page by clicking the restart button at the top of the page.
    Choosing the right slot count

For a smooth experience, choose a slot count that matches the type of gameplay you are running. A roleplay server with heavy scripts may need fewer slots than a simple sandbox session.

    2. How to confirm the new slot count is active

After your server restarts, it is a good idea to check that the new limit is working correctly before inviting players.

    1. Open the Console from the left-hand menu.
    2. Wait for the server to finish starting up. You will see a line in the console output that shows the server is ready.
    3. Connect to your server in-game and check the server browser listing. The player slot count shown in the server browser should reflect the number you set.
    All done

If the correct slot count appears in the server browser or in-game server info, your change has taken effect successfully.

    Troubleshooting

    • The slot count did not change after saving. Make sure you restarted the server after saving. Changes to server settings only take effect after a full restart.
    • The server browser still shows the old slot count. Server browser listings can take a few minutes to refresh. Wait a moment and check again, or try searching for your server directly by IP.
    • Players are still being kicked when the server is full. Double-check the value you saved in Server Config and make sure it was saved correctly before the restart.
    • The Max Players field is not visible in Server Config. If you cannot find the setting, try using the File Manager to locate your server configuration file. The relevant setting is typically in your main server config file. If you are unsure which file to edit, contact support for guidance.
    • Performance feels worse after increasing slots. More players means more server load. If your server is struggling, consider reducing the slot count or upgrading your plan.
