How to Install and Manage Mods on Your Don't Starve Together Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 22, 2026

Learn how to install and manage mods on your Don't Starve Together server using the RiverHosting panel so your players can enjoy a fully customised survival experience.

Mods are one of the best parts of running your own Don't Starve Together server. They let you add new characters, change gameplay mechanics, adjust difficulty, and give your players a completely unique experience. The RiverHosting panel makes adding and managing mods straightforward, without needing to edit files by hand.

    Before you start

    • Make sure your Don't Starve Together server is set up and has been started at least once.
    • You will need the Workshop ID for any mod you want to install. You can find this in the URL on the Steam Workshop page for the mod. For example, if the URL ends in ?id=1234567890, the Workshop ID is 1234567890.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com before you begin.
    Check mod compatibility

Always check that a mod supports the current version of Don't Starve Together before installing it. Outdated mods can cause your server to crash or fail to start.

    1. How to install mods using the Mods page

The Don't Starve Together server has a dedicated Mods page in the RiverHosting panel. This is the easiest way to add mods without touching any files directly.

    1. Open the RiverHosting panel and select your Don't Starve Together server.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click Mods.
    3. You will see an area where you can enter Steam Workshop mod IDs. Type in the Workshop ID for the mod you want to add.
    4. Save your changes once you have added all the mods you want.
    5. Restart your server so the changes take effect. You can do this from the Console page by clicking Restart.
    Multiple mods at once

You can add several mod IDs at the same time before saving. Add them all first, then save once and restart your server a single time.

    2. How to configure mod settings

Some mods support extra configuration options that let you customise how they behave on your server. These settings are usually stored in a configuration file that you can edit through the File Manager.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Files to open the File Manager.
    2. Navigate to the folder where your server's mod configuration files are stored. This is typically inside your cluster folder, in a path similar to MyDediServer/Master/modoverrides.lua.
    3. Open the modoverrides.lua file by clicking on it.
    4. Find the entry for the mod you want to configure. Each mod has a block of settings you can adjust. Change the values you want.
    5. Click Save when you are done.
    6. Restart your server from the Console page for the new configuration to apply.
    Be careful editing configuration files

Make sure you follow the correct format when editing modoverrides.lua. A small syntax mistake can stop your server from starting. If you are unsure, take a backup before making changes.

    3. How to remove a mod

If a mod is causing problems or you simply no longer want it, removing it is just as simple as adding it.

    1. Go to the Mods page in the left-hand menu.
    2. Find the Workshop ID for the mod you want to remove and delete it from the list.
    3. Save your changes.
    4. Restart your server from the Console page.
    Removing mods mid-game

Removing a mod that added content to a running world can cause errors or corrupt world data. If your world depends on content added by a mod, consider starting a fresh world after removing it, or take a backup first.

    4. How to take a backup before making mod changes

Before adding or removing mods, it is a good idea to back up your server. This means you can restore your world if something goes wrong.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click Backups.
    2. Click the button to create a new backup and wait for it to complete.
    3. Once the backup is finished, you can safely make your mod changes.
Back up before every major change

Backups take only a moment and can save you a lot of frustration. Get into the habit of creating one before installing, updating, or removing mods.

    Troubleshooting

    • Server fails to start after adding a mod: Check the Console for error messages. The mod may be incompatible with the current game version, or there could be a typo in the Workshop ID. Try removing the most recently added mod and restarting.
    • Mod is not appearing in-game: Make sure the Workshop ID is correct and that you saved the Mods page before restarting. Some mods also need to be enabled by each player in the in-game mod menu.
    • Server crashes after adding a mod configuration: Open the File Manager and check your modoverrides.lua file for formatting errors. Restore from a backup if the file is too difficult to fix manually.
    • Mod worked before but has stopped working: A recent game or mod update may have broken compatibility. Check the Steam Workshop page for the mod to see if the author has posted any updates or known issues.
