How to Use the Quick Setup Wizard to Get Your Game Server Ready
Learn how to use the Quick Setup wizard in the RiverHosting panel to answer a few questions, start your server and get a join address you can share with friends.
New to game server hosting? The Quick Setup wizard walks you through the first settings for your server in a few short screens. This guide shows you how it works, how to reopen it later, and how to get your join address at the end.
Before you start
- You need a RiverHosting game server. Log in to the panel at https://panel.riverhosting.com and open your server.
- The wizard opens automatically the first time you open a new server for most supported games. The questions you see depend on your game.
- Some steps need your server to be stopped. The wizard will tell you when this applies.
If you are not ready to answer the questions, you can skip the wizard and come back to it at any time.
1. How to go through the Quick Setup wizard
- Open your server from the panel. On a new server, the Quick Setup wizard opens by itself.
- Read each screen and fill in your answers. Every game has its own questions, so what you see will match the game you chose.
- Click Continue to move to the next screen. Click Back if you want to change an earlier answer.
- If you would rather set things up yourself later, click Skip setup.
- On the last screen, click Done or Start my server. If your server is already running, you will see Restart my server instead.
When your server is already running, click Restart my server on the last screen. This makes your new answers take effect.
2. How to get your join address from the last screen
The last screen of the wizard shows the address players use to join your server. It can also create a subdomain for you, which is an easier name to share than a string of numbers.
- Finish the wizard until you reach the last screen.
- Copy the address shown there and send it to your friends.
- If you want an easier name, use the option on that screen to create a subdomain.
You can have up to 2 subdomains per server, using playriver.net, playminecraft.pro or playriver.xyz. Only Minecraft Java lets players join without typing a port. For other games, players type the subdomain followed by a colon and the port, for example survival.playriver.net:port.
You can also copy your join address at any time from the IP chip at the top of every server page.
3. How to reopen the wizard later
You can open the wizard again whenever you want to review or change your answers.
- Open your server in the panel.
- Look at the chips at the top of the page.
- Click Finish quick setup if you have not completed the wizard yet, or Open setup guide if you have.
- Go through the screens again and finish with Done, Start my server or Restart my server.
If you change your server to a different game with the Game Changer, the Quick Setup wizard starts again for the new game.
Troubleshooting
- The wizard did not open by itself: Look for the Finish quick setup or Open setup guide chip at the top of your server page and click it.
- I do not see a quick setup chip: The wizard may not be available for your game. Open the pages in your server's left-hand menu to change settings instead.
- A step asks me to stop the server: Go to Console, click Stop, wait until the status badge shows OFFLINE, then continue the wizard.
- My answers did not seem to change anything: If your server was running, the changes only apply after a restart. Open the wizard again and click Restart my server on the last screen.
- Friends cannot join with my subdomain: For games other than Minecraft Java, make sure they add the port after the subdomain. You can also copy the IP chip at the top of the page and share that instead.
