How to Rename Your Team Fortress 2 Server
Learn how to change your Team Fortress 2 server name from the RiverHosting panel so players can find and recognise your server in the server browser.
Your Team Fortress 2 server name is the label players see when they browse for servers in-game. Changing it is quick and does not require any manual file editing. This guide walks you through updating your server name from the RiverHosting panel in just a few steps.
Before you start
- Make sure you are logged in to the RiverHosting panel.
- Open your Team Fortress 2 server from your server list.
- You will need to restart your server after saving the change for the new name to appear in the server browser.
A clear, unique server name helps players find your server again later and builds a recognisable community presence.
1. How to change your Team Fortress 2 server name
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel and select your Team Fortress 2 server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Look for the server name field. It is usually labelled something like Hostname or Server Name.
- Clear the current name and type your new server name.
- Scroll down and click Save to apply your changes.
- Restart your server so the new name takes effect. You can do this by clicking Restart at the top of your server page.
Keep your server name reasonably short. Very long names can be cut off in the in-game server browser, making them harder to read.
2. How to confirm the name change worked
- Once the server has finished restarting, open Team Fortress 2 on your computer.
- Go to Find Multiplayer Game and browse the server list, or use the Add a Server option and enter your server's IP address and port.
- Your server should now appear with the new name you set.
You can find your server's IP address and connection port on the Network page in the left-hand menu of the RiverHosting panel.
Troubleshooting
- The name did not change after saving. Make sure you clicked Save before restarting. If it still shows the old name, try stopping the server fully and then starting it again rather than just restarting.
- The name shows correctly in the panel but not in the server browser. Server browser listings can take a minute or two to refresh. Wait a short while and try searching again.
- The name field appears blank. Type your desired name into the field and save. A blank hostname will often cause the server to use a default name, so it is important to set one explicitly.
- The name is being cut off in-game. Shorten the name so it fits within the display limit of the in-game server browser.
