How to Configure Your Space Engineers Server Settings from the Panel
Learn how to adjust your Space Engineers server settings from the RiverHosting panel so you can customise your game world without editing any files by hand.
Space Engineers gives you a lot of control over how your server runs, from world size and player limits to creative mode and experimental features. The RiverHosting panel puts the most important settings in one place so you can make changes quickly without digging through config files.
This guide walks you through the Server Config page and the other server management pages available for Space Engineers, so you can get your world set up exactly how you and your players want it.
Before you start
- You need an active Space Engineers server with RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Your server should be stopped before you save major setting changes, then started again afterwards. Some settings will not take effect until the next restart.
For the safest results, stop your server before making changes on the Server Config page, then start it again once you are done. Changing settings on a live server can sometimes cause unexpected behaviour.
1. Open the Server Config page
- Log in to panel.riverhosting.com.
- Click on your Space Engineers server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
The Server Config page is the central place to manage your Space Engineers server. It presents the most commonly changed options in a form so you do not need to edit any configuration files manually.
Common settings you can adjust include your server name, description, maximum player count, game mode (survival or creative), world size, and whether experimental mode features are enabled.
2. Set your server name and description
- On the Server Config page, find the Server Name field.
- Type the name you want players to see when browsing for your server.
- If there is a Description field, you can add a short message players will see on the server listing. This is optional.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.
Your server name appears in the in-game server browser and helps your friends find you easily.
3. Choose your game mode
- On the Server Config page, look for the game mode setting. This is usually labelled Game Mode or similar.
- Select either Survival or Creative depending on how you want to play.
- Click Save.
In Creative mode, players have unlimited resources and can build freely. In Survival mode, players must gather materials and manage their health and energy. Choose the mode that fits your community.
4. Set the maximum number of players
- On the Server Config page, find the Max Players field.
- Enter the number of players you want to allow on the server at one time.
- Click Save.
Keep in mind that Space Engineers is a demanding game. Running a large number of active players at once requires more server resources. Start with a lower number and increase it if performance feels smooth.
5. Manage your worlds and saves
- In the left-hand menu, click Worlds & Backups.
- From here you can view your current world save, download a copy of it, or manage saved worlds.
- If you want to start fresh, you can wipe the current world from this page. Be careful, as this cannot be undone.
Wiping a world from the Worlds & Backups page permanently deletes that save. Make sure you download a backup first if you want to keep a copy of your progress.
It is a good habit to download a world backup before making large changes to your server settings or updating mods. You can use the Backups tab for automated and on-demand backups as well.
6. Enable crossplay (optional)
- In the left-hand menu, click Crossplay.
- This page lets you control whether players on different platforms can join your server together.
- Toggle the setting to your preference and save the change.
Space Engineers supports crossplay between certain platforms. If you want to allow the widest group of players to join, enabling crossplay is worth considering.
7. Install and manage mods
- In the left-hand menu, click Mods.
- From the Mods page, you can add or remove mods for your server.
- Paste in or search for the mod you want to add, then save your changes.
- Restart your server after adding or removing mods so they load correctly.
Not all mods work well together. If your server crashes or fails to start after adding a mod, try removing the most recently added mod first and restarting.
8. Use the Torch admin tool (advanced)
- In the left-hand menu, click Torch.
- Torch is an advanced server management tool for Space Engineers that gives you additional admin controls, including in-game commands, performance tools, and plugin support.
- Use the Torch page to configure Torch-specific settings if you have it enabled on your server.
Torch adds powerful features but is not required for a basic Space Engineers server. If you are just getting started, you can come back to this later.
Troubleshooting
- Changes are not taking effect. Make sure you stopped the server before saving your settings, then started it again. Some options only apply on next startup.
- Players cannot connect after a settings change. Check the Network page in the left-hand menu to confirm the server IP and port are correct, and share those details with your players.
- Server crashes after adding a mod. Go to the Mods page and remove the mod you most recently added, then restart. Check that the mod supports the current version of Space Engineers.
- World progress is missing. Open the Worlds & Backups page and check whether an older save is available to restore. If you have automated backups set up, check the Backups tab too.
- Torch is not loading. Check the Console tab for any error messages during startup. Torch plugin conflicts can prevent the server from loading correctly.
