How to Wipe and Regenerate Your Rust Server Map
Learn how to wipe and regenerate your Rust server map from the RiverHosting panel so your server stays fresh and your players always have a new world to explore.
Rust servers naturally get crowded over time. Bases pile up, resources become scarce, and the map starts to feel worn out. Running a regular map wipe keeps your server feeling fresh and gives every player an equal start. The RiverHosting panel includes a dedicated Wipe Manager that makes this process straightforward, even if you have never done it before.
This guide walks you through wiping your Rust map and regenerating a new world using the built-in tools in your server page.
Before you start
- You need an active Rust server through RiverHosting. Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Warn your players before you wipe. A wipe removes all player-built structures and gathered resources from the map. This cannot be undone once it runs.
- If you want to save a copy of your current map data before wiping, create a backup first from the Backups tab.
- Decide whether you want to wipe only the map, or also wipe player blueprints. These are separate actions and the guide covers both.
A map wipe deletes all bases, loot, and world data from the current map. There is no undo. Make a backup first if you want to keep a copy of the current state.
1. Open the Wipe Manager
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com.
- Select your Rust server from the server list.
- In the left-hand menu, click Wipe Manager.
- You will see options for wiping your map and, separately, wiping player blueprints.
A blueprint wipe resets the research progress every player has unlocked. This is separate from the map wipe. Many server owners run map wipes more often than blueprint wipes. Check what your players expect before doing both at once.
2. Choose your map settings before wiping
Before you trigger the wipe, it is a good idea to confirm or update your map settings. This controls what the new map will look like after the wipe runs.
- In the left-hand menu, click Map.
- Here you can set the map seed and map size for the next generated world.
- If you want a completely random new map each wipe, clear the seed field or enter a new value. If you want the same layout every time, keep the same seed.
- Adjust the map size if needed. Larger maps suit bigger player counts, while smaller maps keep gameplay more intense.
- Save your changes before moving on.
There are community tools and websites where Rust players share and preview map seeds before using them. You can paste a seed into one of those tools to see what the map looks like before committing to it on your server.
3. Run the map wipe
- Go back to Wipe Manager in the left-hand menu.
- Stop your server first if it is currently running. You can do this from the Console tab using the Stop button, or by sending the stop command in the console.
- In the Wipe Manager, locate the map wipe option and click the wipe button.
- Confirm the action when prompted. The panel will clear the current map data.
- If you also want to wipe blueprints, use the blueprint wipe option on the same page and confirm that separately.
Always stop your server before running a wipe. Wiping while the server is running can cause errors or incomplete data removal.
4. Start the server and verify the new map
- After the wipe completes, go to the Console tab.
- Click the Start button to start your server.
- Watch the console output as the server starts. You should see it generating a new map using the seed and size you set in step 2.
- Once the server is fully online, connect to it in Rust and confirm the map is fresh.
If the server starts without errors and you load into a clean, empty map, the wipe was successful. Your players can now join a brand new world.
5. Schedule future wipes with the Schedules page (optional)
If you want to automate your wipes so they happen on a regular schedule, such as every Thursday or on the first of each month, you can set this up using the Schedules page.
- In the left-hand menu, click Schedules.
- Create a new schedule and set the timing using the day and time fields.
- Add tasks to the schedule to stop the server, run the wipe command, and then restart the server in sequence.
- Save the schedule and enable it.
Facepunch, the team behind Rust, forces a full wipe on the first Thursday of every month when they push major updates. Many server owners align their own wipe schedule with this so the timing feels natural to players.
Troubleshooting
- The map did not change after the wipe. Make sure the server was fully stopped before the wipe ran. Restart the server completely and check the console for map generation messages.
- Players can still see their old base or items. This usually means the wipe did not complete correctly. Stop the server, run the wipe again from the Wipe Manager, and restart.
- The server is not starting after the wipe. Check the Console tab for error messages. A common cause is an invalid map seed or a size value that is too large for your server plan. Try a different seed or reduce the map size in the Map page.
- Blueprint progress is still showing for players. Blueprint data is wiped separately. If you did not run the blueprint wipe, player research progress will carry over. Return to the Wipe Manager and run the blueprint wipe if needed.
- I cannot find the Wipe Manager in the menu. The Wipe Manager is only available on Rust servers. If you do not see it, make sure you are viewing a Rust server and not a different game. Contact support if the page is missing.
