How to Add and Manage Admins on Your Factorio Server

    3 min read·Updated Jul 21, 2026

Learn how to add and manage admins on your Factorio server from the RiverHosting panel so trusted players can help keep your game running smoothly.

If you want trusted players to help manage your Factorio server, you can give them admin privileges. Admins on a Factorio server can run commands, kick or ban players, and keep things in order without you needing to be online yourself. The RiverHosting panel makes it straightforward to manage your admin list directly, without editing config files by hand.

    Before you start

    • Make sure your Factorio server is set up and has been started at least once.
    • You will need the in-game username of any player you want to make an admin. Factorio uses your Factorio.com account username, so make sure you have the correct spelling.
    • Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your Factorio server.
    Case-sensitive usernames

Factorio usernames are case-sensitive. Double-check the exact username before adding someone as an admin to avoid errors.

    1. How to add an admin using the Admins and Access page

The easiest way to manage admins on your Factorio server is through the built-in Admins and Access page in the panel.

    1. Log in to the RiverHosting panel and select your Factorio server.
    2. In the left-hand menu, click Admins & Access.
    3. You will see a list of current admins and a field to add new ones.
    4. Type the Factorio username of the player you want to make an admin into the input field.
    5. Click the button to add them to the admin list.
    6. Restart your server for the change to take effect. You can do this by clicking Restart from the top of your server page.
    Admin added

Once the server restarts, the player will have admin privileges and can use admin commands in-game straight away.

    2. How to remove an admin

You can remove a player from the admin list at any time from the same page.

    1. Go to Admins & Access in the left-hand menu.
    2. Find the player you want to remove from the list of current admins.
    3. Click the remove or delete option next to their username.
    4. Restart your server to apply the change.
    Restart required

Admin changes do not take effect until the server has been restarted. If a player's privileges seem unchanged after editing the list, make sure you have restarted the server.

    3. How to verify admin status in-game

After adding an admin and restarting the server, you or the player can confirm that admin privileges are active by following these steps in-game.

    1. Join the Factorio server as the player who was granted admin access.
    2. Open the in-game console by pressing the tilde key (~) or backslash (\), depending on your keyboard layout.
    3. Type /admin and press Enter. If the command responds without an error, the player has admin access.
    Admin commands

Factorio admins can use commands like /kick, /ban, /unban, and /promote directly from the in-game console. These commands only work for players with admin privileges.

    4. How to use the RCON console for live admin commands

If you need to run admin commands without being in-game, the RiverHosting panel includes a built-in RCON console for Factorio servers. This lets you issue commands directly from the panel.

    1. In the left-hand menu, click RCON.
    2. The RCON console will open. You can type Factorio console commands here and send them directly to the running server.
    3. For example, to promote a player to admin from RCON, type /promote username, replacing username with the player's Factorio username, then press Enter or click Send.
    Useful for live servers

The RCON console is handy when you need to act quickly on a live server without interrupting gameplay or restarting. Changes made through RCON take effect immediately.

    Troubleshooting

    • The player does not have admin access after a restart. Check that you entered their username correctly. Factorio usernames are case-sensitive. Remove the entry and re-add it with the correct casing.
    • The Admins and Access page is not showing. Make sure you are on the correct server in the panel and that the server type is Factorio. Try refreshing the page.
    • RCON commands are not working. Make sure the server is running before using the RCON console. Commands will not work if the server is stopped or starting up.
    • The player says they still cannot use admin commands in-game. Ask them to leave and rejoin the server after the restart. Sometimes a fresh connection is needed for the privileges to appear.
