How to Install and Manage Mods on Your Conan Exiles Server
Learn how to install and manage mods on your Conan Exiles server using the RiverHosting panel so you can expand your world without any manual file editing.
Mods are one of the best ways to customise your Conan Exiles server. They can add new items, change gameplay mechanics, overhaul the visuals, or bring in entirely new systems that the base game does not include. The RiverHosting panel gives you a dedicated Mods page so you can handle this without touching any files manually.
Before you start
- You need an active Conan Exiles server on RiverHosting. If you do not have one yet, visit riverhosting.com to get started.
- Log in to the RiverHosting panel at panel.riverhosting.com and open your Conan Exiles server.
- Mods for Conan Exiles are distributed through the Steam Workshop. You will need the Workshop ID for any mod you want to install. You can find a mod's Workshop ID in its Steam Workshop URL.
- All players who connect to your server will also need to have the same mods installed on their local game client. Conan Exiles will not load a mod on a player's machine automatically, so let your players know which mods you are running.
Before adding or removing mods, it is a good idea to create a backup of your server from the Backups tab. Mods can sometimes conflict with each other or with existing save data, and having a backup means you can restore to a clean state if something goes wrong.
1. How to add mods to your Conan Exiles server
The Mods page in the RiverHosting panel is the easiest way to add Steam Workshop mods to your server. Here is how to do it:
- Log in to the panel at panel.riverhosting.com and select your Conan Exiles server.
- In the left-hand menu, click Mods.
- You will see an area where you can enter or paste a Steam Workshop mod ID. Find the mod you want on the Conan Exiles Steam Workshop and copy the numeric ID from the page URL.
- Enter the Workshop ID into the field and confirm or add the mod to your list.
- Repeat this process for each mod you want to install.
- Once you have added all the mods you want, restart your server so the changes take effect. You can do this from the Console tab by clicking the restart button at the top of the page.
Conan Exiles loads mods in a specific order, and the order can matter when two mods touch the same game systems. If you notice conflicts or unexpected behaviour after adding multiple mods, try adjusting the order in which they are listed on the Mods page.
2. How to remove a mod from your server
If a mod is causing problems or you simply no longer want it, removing it is straightforward:
- Go to the Mods page in the left-hand menu.
- Find the mod you want to remove in your current mod list.
- Click the remove or delete option next to that mod.
- Restart your server from the Console tab for the change to take effect.
If a mod added items, structures, or crafting recipes to your world, removing it can cause those objects to disappear or cause errors when the world loads. If your players have built with mod-added items, remove mods carefully and let them know in advance.
3. How to check which mods are currently active
You can review the mods currently installed on your server at any time:
- Open your Conan Exiles server in the panel.
- Click Mods in the left-hand menu.
- Your current mod list will be displayed. Each entry shows the Workshop ID and, where available, the mod name.
This is useful if you are sharing your server details with players so they know exactly which mods to install on their local game client.
When a mod author publishes an update on the Steam Workshop, your server will pick up the updated version the next time it restarts. You do not need to remove and re-add mods manually to get updates.
4. How to adjust your server settings after adding mods
Some mods add new configuration options or require you to change game settings to work correctly. You can adjust your Conan Exiles server settings using the Server Config page in the panel:
- In the left-hand menu, click Server Config.
- Review the available settings and make any changes the mod documentation recommends.
- Save your changes and restart the server.
If a mod requires you to edit a specific configuration file directly, you can do that through the File Manager in the left-hand menu. Navigate to the relevant file, open it, make your edits, save, and then restart the server.
Troubleshooting
- The server crashes on startup after adding a mod. One of your mods may be incompatible with the current server version or with another mod in your list. Try removing the most recently added mod and restarting to identify the cause. Check the Console tab for error messages that name the problematic mod.
- Players cannot connect after enabling mods. Make sure all players have installed the same mods on their local Conan Exiles client. Conan Exiles requires the client and server mod lists to match.
- A mod does not appear to be working in-game. Confirm the mod is in your active list on the Mods page, then fully restart the server. Also check the Console tab for any warnings about the mod failing to load.
- Mod order conflicts. If two mods both change the same game feature, try reordering them on the Mods page. The mod listed lower in the list generally takes priority over earlier ones.
- You cannot find the Workshop ID. Open the mod's page on the Steam Workshop in your browser. The ID is the long number at the end of the URL, for example
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1234567890gives you the ID1234567890.
